Media Release - Rescheduled: Public Information Session for Burnley Bridge Reconstruction

Media Release

Cobourg, ON – December 3, 2024 – Due to forecasted heavy snow and inclement weather, Northumberland County has postponed the public information session for the Burnley Bridge reconstruction project, originally scheduled for December 4, 2024 in Warkworth. The session has been rescheduled as follows:

WHEN: Wednesday, December 11, 2024, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
WHERE: Warkworth Legion, 6 Norham Road, Warkworth, ON

This session, rescheduled for next week, will provide an opportunity for residents to meet with the project team, review proposed designs, and discuss details of the planned replacement of the aging Burnley Bridge on County Road 29 in Alnwick/Haldimand Township.

Originally built in 1950, the Burnley Bridge has reached the end of its useful life. Ongoing monitoring and assessments identified the need for major rehabilitation, however, given the costs and the need to meet current and future transportation demands, a full replacement is considered the most feasible solution.

The existing single-lane bridge will be replaced with a two-lane concrete rigid frame bridge to better accommodate current traffic needs. Construction is anticipated to begin in the summer of 2025 and will require a full road closure on a section of County Road 29, lasting approximately four to six months, pending council approval. Speed reduction measures will also be permanently implemented to improve safety in the area.
