Media Release

Cobourg, ON – November 12, 2024 – Northumberland County is pleased to announce that the new warming space at 310 Division Street in Cobourg will officially open tomorrow, November 13, 2024. Following confirmation from the Town of Cobourg at end of day Friday, November 8th that an ECE License was granted for operation of the facility, County and Transition House staff have made final arrangements for staffing, security, and provisions to open the doors tomorrow at 6:00 PM. This 24/7 space will provide individuals experiencing homelessness with a safe and warm place to rest, access washroom and shower facilities, do laundry, and get something to eat.

“This is an important milestone in our community’s ongoing efforts to provide modernized shelter services for those experiencing homelessness,” states Warden Brian Ostrander. “The opening of the warming space is a vital first step in creating a modern, multi-purpose shelter that will better meet community needs. We look forward to welcoming people to this new space.

“Our immediate goal is to get individuals in out of the cold; we appreciate the Town of Cobourg’s hard work to help us get this facility operational as winter approaches. We look forward to ongoing collaboration with the Town, with our clients, partner agencies, and with residents to ensure successful integration of the shelter into the community.”

The opening of the warming space marks the beginning of the transition of shelter services to the newly renovated 310 Division Street location, where a comprehensive range of services will ultimately be available, including the warming/cooling space, emergency shelter spaces, transitional housing, and supportive programs designed to help individuals on their journey to life stabilization.
